How are you celebrating Casey’s 22nd birthday?

Today, April 6, would have been our former news editor Casey Feldman’s 22nd birthday. As many in the Fordham community know, Casey’s life was tragically cut short last July when she fell victim to distracted driving while walking to work in Ocean City, New Jersey. In keeping with her enthusiastic spirit, however, many of her friends are taking her birthday as an opportunity to continue celebrating her life, toasting to her and hoping she’s watching from somewhere upstairs.

A handful of Observer editors who worked closely with Casey during her time at Fordham, myself included, had a mini birthday celebration of our own for Casey. Editor-in-Chief Ashley WennersHerron, Managing Editor Kathryn Feeney, Online Editor PJ Williams, Asst. Online Editor Joe Marvilli and I took the short walk to Magnolia Bakery this afternoon and delighted in pink cupcakes in Casey’s honor. A cupcake connoisseur, Casey used to claim, “One cupcake is a snack. Two is dinner!” We snacked, toasted cupcakes with a “Happy Birthday” placard, and enjoyed the heaven-sent beautiful spring day just outside of Central Park.

Everyone who knew and loved Casey knows that she’s spending her birthday with everybody who loves and misses her, who’s wearing pink in her honor, who’s having cupcakes for dinner, and who’s drinking to the 22nd birthday she’s celebrating elsewhere this year. Happy Birthday, beautiful.
