Conan O’Brien finds surprising new home in TBS

By Kevin Sammutt

Former “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien is returning to late-night
television this November. The comedian reportedly agreed to a five-year deal on
Sunday with the cable network TBS (Turner Broadcasting System), ending months of
speculation as to where the ex-NBC funnyman would next reside.
O’Brien broke the news to the public via Twitter: “The good news: I will be
doing a show on TBS starting in November! The bad news: I'll be playing Rudy on
the all new Cosby Show."
The new program will air Monday through Thursday from 11 p.m. to 12 a.m.
George Lopez’s “Lopez Tonight” will follow in the midnight time slot. “I can’t
think of anything better than doing my show with Conan as my lead-in,” Lopez
said. “It’s the beginning of a new era in late-night comedy.”

In January, O’Brien was abruptly dismissed as host of the “Tonight Show”
after a brief eight-month stint. FOX was rumored to be the frontrunner to
acquire O’Brien, but issues regarding the airing of “Seinfeld” re-runs stalled
those discussions. Xbox Live was even considered a potential new groundbreaking
arena for O’Brien.
Monday night began O’Brien’s “Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on
Television” tour in Eugene, Oregon. The 30-city tour includes performances in
both the United States and Canada, featuring O’Brien’s “Tonight Show Band” (sans
Max Weinberg) and sidekick Andy Richter. The tour arrives at Radio City Musical
Hall on June 1 and 2.

“In three months I’ve gone from network television to Twitter to performing
live in theaters, and now I’m headed to basic cable," O'Brien said. "My plan is
working perfectly.”
