“1000 Year Old” Ice Cream Sandwich from Xie Xie

Ice cream sandwich lovers, I’ve found the Holy Grail. A play on the ‘thousand year old’ preserved duck egg, a Chinese delicacy, the dessert can be found at Xie Xie, an Asian sandwich shop on 45th and 9th Ave. Definitely not as ancient as its name suggests, the sandwich consists of a generous portion of vanilla ice cream nestled between two thin chocolate cookies, and the best part: a burnt black caramel goo center. At $5.00 a pop it’s a pretty pricey calorie-bomb, but well worth trying, and certainly better than your average Mrs. Fields treat. The shop also has a handful of delicious (but vegetarian un-friendly) savory offerings, but if you’re not keen on forking over close to $10 or more for a sandwich, I’d stick to the dessert.
