Say it ain’t so! According to various news sources (including am New York and the New York Times), the Lincoln Triangle Barnes & Noble at 66th and Broadway announced on Monday that they will be closing at the end of January. Spokespeople for the company explained that the neighborhood institution, opened in 1995, cannot afford to remain in the building because of rent hikes.

The store has become a staple on the Upper West Side, with its four floors and popular café located right next to Lincoln Center. Many notable authors and other celebrities have appeared at B&N for book signings and readings. In the age of digital resources, however, online companies such as Amazon.com have put many bookstores out of business (including two other Manhattan Barnes & Noble locations).

B&N still has a store at 82nd and Broadway as well as a 50,000-square-foot store at 86th and Lex. The spokespeople did indicate that the company is looking for a new location on the Upper West Side but did not explain any further.

Along with the demises of once-sturdy giants like Blockbuster and Tower Records, the current economy seems to be changing the face of the Upper West Side.
