School Shootings Overtake Universities in Texas, New Jersey

Ashley Tedesco, blog editor

A gunman opened fire at the University of Texas at Austin this morning in the school’s library before fatally turning the gun on himself. No other injuries were reported, but campus authorities are unsure if a second shooter remains on the loose and are urging students and faculty to remain indoors until the investigation has concluded.

On Friday, a shooting off-campus at Seton Hall resulted in the death of a student at an off-campus party. Four others were wounded. More details on both cases can be found here: University of Texas, Seton Hall University.

The University of Texas was also the site of a shooting in 1966, where ex-Marine Charles Whitman opened fire from the Clock Tower, killing 14 and wounding 32 others. This shooting was one of the most deadly school shootings in United States history, along with the Virginia Tech massacre that took place on April 16, 2007, and the Northern Illinois University shooting that took place on February 14, 2008.

On behalf of the Observer community, we offer our condolences to those affected by these shootings, and a hope that campus violence will soon be a thing of the past.
