The New Blackboard Mobile App Party: You’re Not Invited

Sadia Noor, Assistant Blog Editor
Earlier this week, those elusive beasts from the Fordham IT department announced a new app developed by Blackboard and Sprint for students on the go. For those of us with Apple iTouches, iPhones, or iPads on the Sprint network or with Sprint Palm, Blackberry, or Android devices, we can now totally do our weekly assigned readings off of a 2.5” screen while hustling for seats at Starbucks. As for the rest of us without Sprint? Well, sucks for us. Guess we’re just gonna have to move along to the back of the bus.

Here are the official specs of the Mobile Learning app that was sent to the Fordham community through mass email. For the people who have the following devices, congratulations: you are the Chosen Ones.

Apple’s iTouch, iPhone & iPad:
CAN: access this app via a public, private or Fordham University wifi
network.
CANNOT: access this app via 3G/4G data plans through AT&T or Verizon.

Sprint Android and Palm Devices:
CAN: access the app via their personal 3G/4G data plans (standard data
rates apply) or via a public, private or Fordham University wifi
network.

Sprint Blackberry Devices:
CAN: access the app via their personal 3G/4G data plans (standard data
rates apply) or via public or private wifi network outside of the
University.
CANNOT: access this application at this time via Fordham’s wifi network.

And that’s it. For the most part, people who aren’t on the Sprint network are going to have to wait for a Mobile Learning app that may or may not be developed by Blackboard, considering most mobile carriers are really bad at sharing (remember how long it took for iPhones to come to Verizon?). This is something Blackboard should probably look into, considering there are 94.1 million Verizon subscribers, 95.5 million AT&T subscribers, and a sad 49.9 million subscribers for Sprint nationwide.

So thanks for passing the information along, Fordham IT. As for Blackboard: come on, share the love!
